Personal Achievements
Key Achievements Outside of Work
While I like excelling at everything I do at work, work is not the only aspect of my life that I'm proud of. I also like conquering big, ambitious challenges in my personal life - showcasing the key ones below:
Completed my first triathlon
I embarked on this triathlon challenge despite not being a runner, swimming merely as a hobby, and having no prior experience in competitive biking. I challenged myself to become proficient in the three skills required so that I could compete in my first triathlon. I practiced intently, ultimately completing my first sprint triathlon within 10 months, with a time below my target of 1.5 hours total time.
I'm now currently training for my second triathlon. This time it will be an olympic-style one.
Interviewed julieta venegas
One of the best ways in which I learn new skills, is by directly immersing myself in new environments that I want to work on, even if those environments are a net new for me (an inspiration from the book Ultralearners).Â
In this case, I was working at Google and Julieta Venegas was coming for an interview for the Talks at Google Youtube channel, but the interviewer called in sick the day before. I decided to jump into the opportunity and volunteer for being the interviewer - I had no professional interviewing skills, but I knew my public speaking skills and my ability to listen intently to a speaker during a conversation would serve me well for an unstructured type of interview (i.e. without a script).
Interview can be found in Google's YT channel (here) - I was very nervous before the interview, but I believe it came out very well, receiving great comments from colleagues. I would definitely do it again if i could.
conquered my fear of diving
I've always loved the ocean, but I was terrified of diving, which prevented me from experiencing the wonders of scuba diving. I decided to work on my fear, working gradually towards resolving it, until I was able to dive.
Once I tried it, I discovered one of my new passions in life. Now I have dived all around the world: Australia, Hawaii, Cancun, Caribbean, Colombia. Probably more destinations to come :)
Summited Sahale Glaciar Trail
Yet another example of something I had never done before but decided to expose myself to it in order to gain relevant experience and achievement. This time it was hiking in the snow, while wearing backpacks with full camping gear, for my first camping excursion.
It was extremely tough, particularly as I was hiking with a group of very experienced hikers (which helps with feeling secure during the experience, but their pace and expectations do not align with a novice hiker!). However, I kept going with the group - one step at a time, like many things in life.
Completing the Sahale Glacier Trail in Washington State was a test of my physical endurance. This challenging trek taught me vital lessons in perseverance and mental fortitude. Even better: Reaching the top of the mountain and looking at the view (even with the inclement weather) was one of the most satisfying and rewarding experiences of my life.
Surmounted the ancient Inka Trail
The Inkas, a Peruvian indigenous tribe, used to complete a challenging jungle trail as a tribute to honor their deities. Centuries later, people visiting the Inka area are encouraged to challenge themselves by replicating the original Jungle Trail done by the Inkas.
The endeavor consists of a four-days jungle trail, which includes 44 km of trekking, 80 km of biking, altitudes ranging from 1,520 to 4,350 masl (meters above sea level), and hiking over four different mountains.
At the end of the trail, and after such a strenuous effort, the group of strangers that started the trail was united by a unique experience, which yielded friendships that still last until today.
Moreover, on the last day we were rewarded with one of the best views I've ever experienced, from a mountain overlooking one of the new seven wonders of the world: Machu Picchu.
